Privacy Policy for Sionnach
Last Updated: June 18, 2025
Thank you for using Sionnach ("the App"), an Irish language learning application. This Privacy Policy describes how Shane Hamilton ("I," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and handles your information when you use our application and services.
This policy is created to be transparent and straightforward, especially as the app is in a testing and beta phase.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information:
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and a securely hashed version of your password.
- Audio Recordings: The core function of the app requires audio permission.
- Practice Recordings: The app allows you to record your voice to practice pronunciation. These recordings are processed on your device and are not uploaded to our servers unless you choose to submit them.
- Submitted Audio: You may voluntarily submit audio recordings to help improve the app's content. When you submit audio, we collect the audio file, the corresponding text, and related information like dialect and speaker level. You can submit this audio anonymously or optionally provide a name and email address with your submission.
- Beta Program Requests: If you sign up for our iOS or Android beta, we collect your email address to send you the testing invitation.
- Feedback: We collect the feedback you provide through the in-app form, which is linked to your user account to help us understand the context of the feedback.
- Cookies: We use cookies for essential functions like keeping you logged into your account and for security purposes (e.g., XSRF protection).
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To Provide and Maintain the Service: To manage your account, authenticate you, and allow you to use the app's features.
- To Improve the App: Submitted audio recordings are used to build a database of human-spoken Irish, which helps all users by providing authentic audio examples. Feedback is used to identify bugs and plan new features.
- To Communicate With You: We may use your email address to send you information about the beta program, respond to your feedback, or communicate important updates about the service.
3. Data Security
I take the security of your data seriously.
- Passwords are not stored in plaintext; they are securely hashed using the industry-standard bcrypt algorithm.
- The application is built with security in mind, but please be aware that no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.
4. Data Sharing
As an independent developer, my goal is to build a great learning tool, not to monetize your data.
- We do not sell, trade, or rent your personally identifiable information to third parties.
- Submitted audio, if verified, may be made available to other users of the app as a learning resource. If you did not provide a name with your submission, it will be treated anonymously.
5. Children's Privacy
The app is intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us so we can remove it.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to access the data you have provided to the service. You can do this from your user dashboard. If you wish to delete your account or your data, please contact us.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page.
